The Aquarius Tale
In the depths of a forsaken city, where the moon dipped into the horizon like a ghostly galleon, the legend of Hyginus's Astronomica whispered through the crumbling alleys. It spoke of Aquarius, the Water Bearer, Ganymede, the most radiant of mortals. They said that Jupiter, in the form of an eagle, swooped down from the heavens like a malevolent bird, its eyes burning with an otherworldly hunger.
Ganymede's parents, the mortal King Athamas and Queen Clytemnestra, were torn asunder by their own ambition and lust for power. They saw Ganymede as a prize to be won, a beauty that could quench Jupiter's thirst and grant them dominion over the heavens. So they conspired against him, binding him with chains of gold and silver, and slinging him into the abyss like a sacrifice.
As he plummeted towards the earth, Ganymede's screams were drowned out by the cacophony of the city's inhabitants, their prayers and wails lost in the void. He fell among the stars, his essence coalescing into constellations: Aquila, the Eagle, and Aquarius, a celestial maiden pouring forth her heart's blood into the world.
The heavens themselves seemed to weep at Ganymede's fall, and the Water Bearer became one with the cosmos. His tears fell like diamonds in the firmament, nourishing the gods' gardens of Eden, where the divine dwelled amidst the shadows. The gods, enthralled by his beauty, made him cupbearer of their realm, but at a terrible cost: his essence was forever bound to the earth, a vessel that would one day overflow and unleash a torrent of destruction upon humanity.
As the ages passed, whispers spread of Ganymede's existence among the stars. Some said he still walked the celestial paths, pouring out his life force into the world below, while others claimed he remained hidden, a ghostly messenger from the depths of the universe. The city's inhabitants trembled at the thought of Aquarius, the Water Bearer, and knew that he was a harbinger of doom, a warning of the darkness that lurked beyond the veil of the mortal realm.
After "Auguries of Innocence (opening excerpt)" (William Blake)
To see a World in a Whispering Tree
And a Silence in the Forest deep,
Hold Shadows in the quiet air,
And Memories in every whispered sleep.
A Sparrow's song in autumn skies
Puts all Joy in a lonely sigh.
A River's flow that once did roar
Now murmurs secrets to the shore.
A Bird's nest full of fledged young ones
Shudders Silence for the loss begun.
A Fox's cunning in the night
Predicts the mystery of the light.
A Starling's call that echoes wide
Calls to Solace for the heart's divide.
Each echo of a long-forgotten tale
Unfolds like a parchment frail.
