The Taurus Tale
In the twisted shadow of the Phoenician moon, where the waves whispered secrets to the stones, Europa's tale began. A maiden of unyielding beauty, her father Agenor king of Phoenicia ruled with an iron fist, his power forged in the darkness of Olympus.
As Jupiter, the bull-like god of the skies, carried away his prize, he wrapped her tender form within his massive frame, and Europa's screams echoed through the night. The gods, entranced by her terror, watched as she succumbed to the abyss, her eyes forever lost in the unknown.
The wind howled like a chorus of damned souls as Jupiter guided Europa across the waves, the sea itself seeming to writhe in agony. She seemed to call out for her companions, but only the echoes replied, whispers carried on the wind that only the initiated could hear.
As the night deepened, Europa's form began to fade, like a ghostly apparition vanishing into the shadows. The moon hung low in the sky, its light distorted by the veil of clouds, as if trying to conceal the horror that had unfolded beneath. The sea, once calm and serene, now churned with an otherworldly energy, as if it too were being consumed by some dark and ancient power.
Agenor's command was a distant memory, lost in the maelstrom of his own guilt and fear. His son Cadmus, driven by a hunger for justice and a thirst for revenge, became obsessed with finding Europa, no matter the cost. He sowed dragon's teeth into the soldiers who would stop at nothing to claim their quarry.
As he wandered through the land, Cadmus felt the weight of his father's curse upon him. The land itself seemed to writhe in agony, as if it too were being consumed by some dark and ancient power. The trees loomed like skeletal fingers, reaching towards the sky with bony branches that seemed to grasp for him.
In the heart of Crete, Europa's spirit remained, trapped within the labyrinthine depths of her own mind. She was a prisoner of her own desires, forever bound to the sea, where the moon dipped into the waves like a ghostly hand. The wind howled through the caverns, echoing the whispers of the damned, as if Europa's soul still lingered, waiting for the day when she would be called back to the world above.
And so, the tale of Europa's abduction became a curse, woven into the fabric of the land itself. Cadmus found Thebes, but it was not the city he had set out to build. It was a prison, a tomb where the damned souls of the past were laid to rest. The people of Thebes whispered of the monster that lurked in their midst, a creature born from the darkness of Europa's heart, forever bound to the sea and the moon that hung low in the sky like a ghostly galleon.
After "A Birthday" (Christina Rossetti)
My soul is like a midnight sea
That's tossed upon the waves of pain;
My heart is like a summer's tree
Whose branches are withered, heavy with grief;
My soul is like a whispered prayer
That echoes through the darkened air;
My heart is gladder than all these
Because my love is come to me.
Raise me a flame that burns so bright
With embers of our secret night;
Carve it in stars and crescent's gleam,
And moonflowers with a thousand dreams;
Work it in the silence deep
Where shadows dance upon the keep;
Because on this day of birth I'm free
